The 1st International Cuisle Beatha Programme, 2007
The 1st Cuisle Beatha Palliative Medicine conference took place on the 22nd & 23rd of November in The Radisson SAS, Galway. This conference explored new frontiers in palliative care under the theme of 'Living well despite advanced disease' and aimed to raise awareness of recent ground breaking developments in cancer care; chronic pain; complex regional pain syndrome and interventions possible to get to the source of pain.
The philosophy explored during the conference was that by helping patients to live both pain and symptom free and with good subjective quality of life; they are empowered to live as whole and independent a life as possible. To explore this Philosophy, the story of four patients and a friend was specially recorded on video to show the reality both of suffering and pain relief. These videos screened during the conference are now important educational tools .
The conference had a full programme including World renowned pain experts Professor Anthony Dickenson, Professor Lars Arendt, Dr. Declan O Keefe and Galway University Hospital World Experts.
